Capacity of vision, calmness and clarity, inner force, intuition and empathy…all the abilities requested of modern leaders, which can be reinforced by the practises of Zen meditation.

Strategy and potency in Chinese thoughts

“Everything changes, transforming into something else”. In the old arts of Chinese war, in the same way as the Ancient Greeks, that which counted for efficiency/strategy was the “potentiality of the situation”: the strategy is stimulated, beginning pragmatically in the middle of the situation which is in continuous mutation, and not from a crystallised predisposed plan. The strategy comes to be seen as the research of favourable factors from which to drag profit and through which the great strategy doesn’t project a plan, but discovers and individualises within the evolution of situations the elements which are favourable to make them grow.

The I Ching, the book of change, is above all a “manual of strategy”.
Learning to be efficient means stabilising the appropriate strategy, intended as a way of individualising the all-bearing factors of the situation by exploiting resources available at the moment, in the hic et nunc, in the universe.

The practise of tai chi chuan tries to collect the innumerable implications and metaphors in respect to personal life, and also company life, as well as interpreting the professional life. In tai-chi-chuan, the movement is not expressed through muscular force, but with an internal force reached through balance and concentration. The harmonious movement, which is produced is not a simple dance, but rather a sighing of movement derived from martial arts: defence, grip, attack, and push. A perfect metaphor to represent the difference between western management and that of the orient: the first based on exterior force through direct action, communication, frantic activity; the second based on listening, the balance between action and non-action, lateral movement.

People can work whether on their own reactions (emotional and behavioural) to aggressive attitude using passivity or aggressiveness, or on counterattacks pinpointing through the metaphor of the body the characteristics and advantages of assertive behaviour here defined, with the Taoist point of view, as the point of dynamic balance between passivity and aggressiveness. A training, which passes from the body and permits a true confrontation of the direct consequences of your own behaviour.
